Tattoo of the Maori Tiki symbol, disrespectful for someone not Maori?

I am thinking of getting a tattoo of the Tiki.
I am not Maori, Polynesian or from NZ, but I have read quite a lot of the varying meanings of the symbol and admire it.
Would this be disrespectful, or non-sense for me to use this symbol?

not at all, in fact i think its just the opposite. wanting their symbol because you respect its meaning in their culture is a great sign of respect. i hope you love it when its all done!!

To get a Maori tattoo do you have to be Maori?

I am Maori but do i need to know anything about it?

Well, I guess it depends if you are talking about the ancient Maori warriors. Those tattoos were usually done on the face making them look more dominating. Each battle or combat they won the piece was added onto. So an old Maori warrior that had his entire face covered would be know as one bad dude.

I doubt you are wanting a traditional Maori face piece. If you are wondering if there are any specific clan tribal designs, there were not. The design of the tribal was strictly up to the artist. Yes, the work on there faces was different between clans but that was just because it was done by a different artist with a different imagination and style.

But if you are of Maori descent that would be awesome to have a peace done on your shoulder. You can find lots of images of these designs in your local library.

Also, the Maori were some very bad and large dudes.

The protocol to getting a maori tribal tattoo?

Is there a protocol that goes to getting a tattoo, like a tribal tattoo. I was told there has to be a story to this type of tattoo. I do know family geneology is a blessed protocol. I would like to get a small tribal tattoo.I have always been fascinated by the tattoo designs…awesome. I do have alot of respect for the maori culture. Any info on this will be greatly appreciated…thanks.

These are nice articles about maori tattooing:

Doing some research for a friend, where in NZ can you get a traditional Maori tattoo (chisel not needles?)?

My friend is coming to visit me in NZ and is looking at getting a maori tattoo but hes a bit of a tattoo freak and wants it done the traditional way with the chisel. Does anyone know of anywhere that does this and how much it costs? Any info would be helpful! Thanks!

Best bet is to ask this on www.askbme.com. They will be able to provide you with the best information. Good luck!

Moko Tattoos – New Zealand

Aug 2003
Renewed interest in Maori culture has encouraged a resurgence in traditional maori tattoos.

The tattoos or ‘mokos’ originate back to pre-colonial times when they detailed ancestry lines and tribal affiliations. “It’s the art of kings,” states moko artist Inya Taylor. To take the pain of the moko is a defining moment in a young warrior’s life. As one Maori explains: “If it doesn’t look really painful every moron’s going to want one.”
